Dhaka: The Hindu community in Bangladesh has been forced to change the venue of Durga Puja celebrations in some places due to repeated disruptions by fundamentalist groups. Police said the festival will be celebrated in 32,666 pavilions across Bangladesh.

Many people in Dhaka are against celebrating the festival

Though there is no problem with the minority Hindu community celebrating Durga Puja, the Uttara suburb of the capital Dhaka is one of the few places where there have been reports of disruptions. A week ago, radical Islamist groups formed human chains in some places including Uttara's Sector 11, 13, saying that locals are against Durga Puja.

Madrasa students expressed their protest

As tensions rose in the area, the army and police held a meeting with local leaders of the Hindu and Muslim communities. Last year, the Hindu community celebrated Durga Puja in a ground in Sector 11 of Uttara. But this time, people visiting the nearby mosque and students of madrassas formed a human chain there to stop the puja. Later, when the Hindu community wanted to hold Durga Puja in Sector 13, obstructions were created there too.
