The meeting on Wakf is over. The Wakf JPC has accepted the bill by 14 votes against 11. Opposition members have been asked to submit their dissent note by 4 pm today.
Owaisi's statement came out
Asaduddin Owaisi's statement has come out in this matter. He said, 'Today the draft report has been accepted. 14 votes were in its favour and 11 votes were against it. Last night a report of more than 650 pages was given, how can we read it to anyone so quickly. We are giving a note of disagreement on behalf of our party and we believe that the amendment brought by the Modi government is not to save the property but to destroy it. Waqf is a place of worship for Muslims, they want to snatch it away.'
Asaduddin Owaisi said, 'We believe that the Modi government wants to snatch the Waqf property from Muslims. The government has a majority so they got this amendment passed. Now it will go to the Parliament but we will fight in the Parliament. If needed, we will oppose it outside as well.'
Let us tell you that earlier, the Joint Committee (JPC) of Parliament discussing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 had accepted all the amendments proposed by the members of the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Monday and rejected the amendment proposals of the opposition members. Committee Chairman Jagdambika Pal had said after the meeting that the amendments accepted by the committee would make the law better and more effective. However, opposition MPs condemned the proceedings of the meeting and accused Pal of 'overturning' the democratic process.
Trinamool Congress' Kalyan Banerjee had said, "This was a ridiculous exercise. We were not heard. Jagadambika Pal has acted in a dictatorial manner." Pal, on the other hand, rejected the allegations and said that the entire process was democratic and the opinion of the majority was accepted.
