
News Topical, Digital Desk : Sikkim celebrated its 79th Independence Day on Friday with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang hoisting the national flag at the Paljor Stadium here. The CM also presented Rs one lakh each under the Shravan Kumar Puraskar to 22 out of a total of 199 people for taking care of their elderly parents. Other awardees were given awards in their respective districts during the 79th Independence Day celebrations.
The Sikkim Government has launched the Shravan Kumar Award Scheme to honour sons and daughters who show exceptional care and dedication towards their elderly parents.
National flag hoisted at official residence
Earlier in the day, Tamang also hoisted the national flag at his official residence Mintokgang. "On this historic day, let us reaffirm our pledge to uphold the sanctity of our Constitution and commit ourselves to the welfare, unity and development of our beloved nation," Tamang said.
What did the CM say to the people of the state?
Earlier in a message broadcast, the Chief Minister congratulated all the people of the state on Independence Day. He said, "Today we are celebrating the spirit of freedom, the sacrifices of our freedom fighters and the strength of our great democracy along with the entire country." The Chief Minister said, "Independence Day is not just a remembrance of freedom from colonial rule, but it is also a call to maintain the values of unity, integrity and perseverance, which are the identity of our nation.
Referring to Sikkim, he said his government is fully committed to building a self-reliant, equitable and prosperous state where every child will get quality education, every youth will get opportunity, every farmer will get respect and every family will get a secure future.
