Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered to increase the number of soldiers in the Russian army. After increasing the army by 180,000 soldiers, Russia's army will be the second largest army after China with a strength of 1.5 million soldiers. Putin has ordered to increase the size of the army for the third time after 2022.

Russia will have 1.5 million active soldiers

In an order published on the Kremlin website, Putin ordered the total number of armed forces to be increased to 2.38 million, of which 1.5 million should be active soldiers. According to military think tank International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the increase in the number of troops will enable Russia to overtake the US and India in terms of the number of active combat troops. China has more than 2 million active military personnel.

Russia is reforming its armed forces

Andrei Kartapolov, chairman of the defense committee of the lower house of the Russian parliament, said the increase in the number of active troops was part of a plan to reform the armed forces and gradually increase their size.
