Armed militants from Chechnya held more than 1,100 people hostage for two days at Beslan School No. 1. Two days later, President Putin ordered Russian troops to storm the school building. The troops entered the school and engaged in a gunfight with the militants, killing 31 of them. However, by the end of the attack, 334 civilians, including 186 children, were also killed. The incident was mourned across the world, including Russia.
