Bangkok: Homosexual couples in Thailand will now be able to get married. In fact, after King Maha Vajiralongkorn's approval on Tuesday, the Homosexual Marriage Act has now become a law. This law will come into force in the country from next year i.e. 22 January 2025.

After the law comes into force, any homosexual couple in the country can legally register their marriage. Now Thailand has become the third country in Asia and the first country in South-East Asia to recognize homosexual marriage.

Right of inheritance and adoption

This bill was passed in Thailand's House of Representatives in April and in the Senate in June. Now after the King's approval, it has taken the form of a law. The law has a provision to recognize gay marriages, provide financial and medical rights. Gay couples will be able to adopt children. They have also got the right to inheritance. Now, gender neutral words will be used in place of male-female and husband-wife in place of gender in documents.

The Netherlands was the first to recognize

The Netherlands was the first to recognize gay marriage in 2021. At present, gay marriage has been legally recognized in more than 30 countries of the world. If we talk about Asia, then Thailand has become the third country to do so after Taiwan and Nepal. The formation of the law has brought a wave of happiness among the activists demanding gay marriage in Thailand.

A decade-long battle

This law will come into force in Thailand on 22 January. On the same day, preparations are also underway to hold a mass wedding of more than a thousand gay couples. This event will be held in Bangkok. Let us tell you that the LGBTQ community in Thailand has been fighting this battle for the past decade.
