News Topical, Digital Desk : Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft of precious jewelry and diamonds from Paris's world-famous Louvre Museum. They are residents of the Seine-Saint-Denis region, one of France's most backward regions.
According to officials, one suspect was detained at Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport around 10 p.m. (2000 GMT) Saturday as he was about to board a plane to Algeria. The second suspect was arrested shortly afterward in the Paris area.
French police had information about the suspects
According to local media reports, one of the suspects is a French citizen, while the other holds both French and Algerian citizenship. Both are reportedly in their 30s and were known to French police.
How was the theft carried out?
This major theft at the Louvre occurred on October 19th. Thieves used a crane to break an upstairs window during museum opening hours and stole eight priceless pieces of jewelry worth approximately $102 million from the Galerie d'Apollon, or Apollo Gallery. This happened in about seven minutes. They then fled on motorbikes, sparking a massive manhunt across France.
Days after the incident, a video showed a thief cutting through a glass display case as visitors walked by. Another clip showed two robbers wearing construction gear escaping using a hydraulic lift after the theft.
