News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump has increased tariffs on Canadian imports by another 10 percent. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney is trying to project a calm and controlled atmosphere to the public. Indeed, this increase has reignited trade tensions, which Carney had hoped would subside.

The US and Canada are once again on the brink of a full-scale trade war. Trump's new tariffs come as the two countries are still negotiating the resolution of previous tariffs. Carney's challenges have only increased. He will have to win the trust of Canadian business groups and consumers, while also demonstrating to the US that Canada will not be intimidated by such measures.

Why did Trump impose extra tariffs on Canada?

Speaking of news, Trump announced a 10% increase on Canadian imports after an ad, produced with Ontario government funding, aired during Game 1 of the World Series. The ad used footage of Ronald Reagan from the 1980s criticizing tariffs, which Trump claims was taken out of context.

He demanded the ad's immediate removal and accused Canada of spreading deceptive propaganda. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would remove the ad after the weekend, but the damage was already done. Trump abruptly halted the dreaded negotiations and imposed tariffs.

What did Carney say?

Carney, who arrived in Kuala Lumpur to attend the ASEAN summit, said his government was ready to resume trade talks and would present an ambitious budget in the next two weeks.

He emphasized diversification and shifting Canadian trade focus toward Asia to reduce dependence on the U.S. Carney also confirmed plans to finalize a free-trade deal with ASEAN countries by next year, as well as a parallel pact with the Philippines.
