News Topical, Digital Desk : Irritated by a TV advertisement, US President Donald Trump on Sunday imposed an additional 10 percent tariff on Canada. Many Canadian products already face a 35 percent tariff, while steel and aluminum face a 50 percent tariff. Energy products also face a 10 percent tariff.
Trump did not specify which products or sectors the additional 10 percent tariff would apply to, and threatened to remove the ad immediately.
Why did Trump impose extra tariffs on Canada?
In fact, a commercial is being shown on TV in Canada. It references Reagan's 1987 address in which he criticized tariffs on foreign goods, saying they lead to job losses and trade wars.
Trump said that Ronald Reagan favored tariffs for national security and the economy, but Canada has said it doesn't like them! Canada was supposed to remove the ad immediately, but they let it run, despite knowing it was fraudulent. Due to this misrepresentation of facts and hostile act, I am increasing tariffs on Canada by 10 percent.
What did Trump say?
"The sole purpose of this fraud was Canada's hope that the US Supreme Court would defend them against the tariffs they have used to harm the US for years. Now the US can defend itself against tariffs from Canadians and the rest of the world," he posted on X.
