News Topical, Digital Desk : Following the US's major action in Venezuela, relations between Colombia and the US are now experiencing significant tension. Colombian President Gustavo Petro directly challenged US President Donald Trump, saying, " Come and get me, I'm waiting right here. "

Petro's statement has sparked political turmoil in Latin America. He also strongly criticized the US actions against Venezuela. He warned that if the US invaded, the country's farmers could take up arms and a guerrilla war could erupt in the mountains.

" Public anger will erupt like a Jaguar ."

Petro said that if the US arrested the president, whom the vast majority of the country's population loved and respected, the public's anger would erupt like a jaguar. He also said that he had given up arms in the 1990s, but would not hesitate to take up arms again to defend the country.

Gustavo Petro himself was a former leftist guerrilla and later entered politics. His statement is being considered extremely serious against this backdrop. Tensions between the United States and Colombia escalated further when Trump said that Colombia was being run by a sick man who sells cocaine in the United States. Trump also said that he was okay with taking military action against Colombia, further deepening the dispute.

Colombia's Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that the country favors dialogue and cooperation in international relations. However, it clearly stated that any form of threat or use of force will not be accepted. It is noteworthy that in October, Trump imposed sanctions on Petro and some members of his family for their involvement in the illegal drug trade. Colombia is the world's largest producer of cocaine. Coca is cultivated primarily in Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia.

Maduro also challenged Trump

Earlier in August, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro also challenged Trump to " come and get me . " On Sunday, the White House shared a video on the social media platform X, showing past statements by Maduro and footage of his arrest. The video also included a statement from US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said Maduro had crossed the line.

After months of planning, the US military acted swiftly and arrested Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas. Trump said Maduro and his wife face drug trafficking and narco-terrorism charges in the Southern District of New York.
