News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump said on Monday he would take control of Washington's police department and deploy 800 National Guard troops in the nation's capital to deal with the chaos. He would also send in the US Army if needed as he declared a public safety emergency.

Trump says he has taken this decision to improve law and order, although data shows that violent crime has reached the lowest level in 30 years in 2024. Trump told reporters at the White House in the presence of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Attorney General Pam Bandy, I am deploying the National Guard to help maintain law and order in Washington, DC.

Trump described Washington as a hell of criminals and uncontrolled violence. Meanwhile, Washington D.C.'s Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser rejected Trump's claims, saying violent crime last year had reached its lowest level in more than three decades.

Trial begins over use of US military force

Trump also deployed National Guard troops in Los Angeles in June when the situation worsened after immigration action. A historic lawsuit is starting on Monday over the Trump administration's decision to use the US military in the role of police.

The hearing before US District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco will determine whether the government, by deploying the National Guard to Los Angeles, violated a 19th century law that prohibits the use of troops in a police role.

It will also determine whether the Trump administration violated US law by deploying National Guard troops and US Marines without the approval of Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.
