News Topical, Digital Desk : Two mechanics were trapped when a lift fell from the third floor of a hospital under construction. One died on the spot. The other was admitted to SDS Global Hospital in critical condition. Police and forensic teams arrived at the scene after receiving information. The lift has been sealed for now.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the lift fell when a wire latch came loose from the angle during a trial run after the foundation was laid. The mechanic's family also created a ruckus at the scene. Police pacified them.
Dr. Sudhanshu Kumar, a resident of Rajnagar Extension, Ghaziabad, has been building the Navodaya Hospital in Sakauti for quite some time. Finishing work is underway at the hospital. Pankaj Kumar was awarded the contract to install lifts from Icon Elevators Company to transport patients within the hospital.
On Thursday, Pankaj Kumar hired two mechanics, 22-year-old Karan Kumar, a resident of Kinanagar Bhavanpur, and Ankit Kumar, a resident of Ajhouta, to test the lift. Both mechanics had been testing the lift since morning. After laying the foundation, angles were used to make wire hooks. The trial was then conducted by running the lift on the wire hooks. Ankit and Karan were inside the lift themselves.
After reaching the third floor, the wires came loose from the angled hooks. The lift fell from the third floor to the ground floor with a thud. Karan, who was inside the lift, died on the spot, while Ankit was seriously injured. Both were immediately taken to SDS Global Hospital, where Karan was declared dead. Ankit is being treated in critical condition. On receiving information about the accident, Daurala police and forensic team reached the spot.
The scene of the incident has been sealed. Following the incident, relatives of Karan and Ankit also arrived at the scene. They began protesting against the contractor and the hospital operator. Police intervened and calmed them down. Karan's body was sent to the mortuary for post-mortem.
Preliminary police investigations have revealed that during the trial run, wire hooks were made and inserted into the elevator's angle. Both mechanics were then sitting in the elevator conducting the trial run. A jolt on the third floor caused the wire hooks to come loose from the angle. Suddenly, the elevator plummeted from the third floor to the ground floor. One mechanic died inside the elevator, while the other remains in critical condition.
