News Topical, Digital Desk : Has it ever happened to you that a blue mark suddenly appeared on your hand or foot, and you couldn't remember hitting anything? People often dismiss it as a mere forgetfulness.

However, Los Angeles-based foot surgeon Dr. Dana Figura says there may be some medical reasons behind these marks, which are important to understand. Let's learn about them.

What is 'purpura simplex'?

According to Dr. Dana Figura, recurring bruising without any major injury could be a common medical condition called Purpura Simplex. This is a vascular bleeding disorder that's more common in women than in men. While it's harmless in most cases, recurring unexplained bruising can indicate that the blood vessels beneath your skin are fragile.

Why do blood vessels burst?

Just beneath our skin lie tiny veins called capillaries. These capillaries are very delicate and can burst with even the slightest pressure or shock, which we may not even notice.

There can be many reasons behind this-

  • Hormonal changes – Blood capillaries are affected due to hormonal fluctuations in the body .
  • Skin structure- texture and thickness of the skin.
  • Collagen deficiency – A deficiency or variation in the structure of collagen, which supports blood vessels, can cause capillaries to break easily.

When does it become a matter of concern?

Although these blue marks are often benign, foot surgeon Dr. Figura says they shouldn't always be dismissed as minor. Sometimes, they can be a sign of a serious deficiency, such as vitamin deficiencies, anemia, or iron deficiency.

Do not ignore these symptoms

If you are experiencing the following symptoms along with blue marks, then you should immediately consult a doctor-

  • Feeling very tired .
  • Bleeding gums or nosebleeds.
  • Excessive bleeding during periods.
