This decision has been taken after Jayant Patil resigned. After his resignation, many names were being speculated but now Shashikant Shinde's name has been finalized.
Shashikant Shinde is considered a powerful leader in West Maharashtra and considering his experience, the party has given him such a big responsibility in Maharashtra. Shinde has been active in politics from a young age.
Who is Shashikant Shinde?
Shashikant Shinde is a resident of Humgaon village in Javli taluka of Satara district of Maharashtra. He is a graduate in commerce and is known as an influential leader of Mathadi workers (heavy workers). He was born on 19 October 1963. His childhood was spent in the well-cultured and loving environment of his father Jaywantrao Shinde and mother Kausalya Shinde.
Shashikant Shinde started taking active part in social and political field at a very young age. In 1999, he contested election for the first time from Javli assembly constituency and won by a margin of 12,000 votes. He has also been the Water Resources Minister of Krishna Ghati Patbandhare Mahamandal (Irrigation Development Corporation) of Maharashtra Government.
He was a former MLA from Koregaon.
From 2009 to 2014, he was a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA from Koregaon assembly constituency. In this election, he defeated Shalini Tai Patil. Shashikant Shinde has represented Javli twice and Koregaon twice as an MLA. However, in the 2019 assembly elections, he had to face defeat from Mahesh Shinde of Shiv Sena on the Koregaon seat.
After this, Shashikant Shinde contested
from Satara Lok Sabha seat as a candidate of Mahavikas Aghadi. He was in the fray from Nationalist Congress (Sharad Pawar faction) against BJP Mahayuti candidate Chhatrapati Udayanraje Bhosale, but he had to face defeat.
Currently a member of the Legislative Council,
he again faced defeat in the assembly elections against Mahesh Shinde from Koregaon. Currently, Shashikant Shinde is a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council and is serving as the main opposition leader (chief opposition leader) of the Nationalist Congress (Sharad Pawar faction).
