News Topical, Digital Desk : The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured nearly 50 percent of the vote in the recently concluded parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, securing a two-thirds majority. Led by Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, the BNP secured 209 of the 297 seats.
BNP's former ally Jamaat-e-Islami has secured around 32 per cent of the votes and has emerged as the main opposition party.
Vote percentage of independent candidates
Independent candidates secured 5.79 percent of the vote, while other political parties lagged far behind, an Election Commission spokesman said Sunday. The right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami, which opposed the country's independence from Pakistan in 1971, recorded its best-ever performance, winning 68 seats.
National Citizens only got six seats
The National Citizens Party, formed by students who protested against then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024, won only six seats and three percent of the vote.
The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus dissolved Sheikh Hasina's Awami League last year and barred the party from contesting elections. Thus, the country's traditional electoral landscape was altered. According to the Election Commission, 59.44 percent of voters exercised their franchise in the parliamentary elections.

Unidentified miscreants broke a window, threw gasoline or a similar substance inside, and set it on fire. Police have identified two people as suspects, and the investigation is ongoing. BNP subdistrict general secretary Bashiruddin Bachchu said rival political parties may be behind the attack.
