News Topical, Digital Desk : The United States, Israel, and Qatar held a secret meeting in New York on Sunday (December 7). The American news outlet Axios reported this, citing sources. This trilateral meeting is considered significant because Israel recently carried out airstrikes in Qatar's capital, Doha, targeting prominent Hamas leaders.
According to two sources cited by Axios, the talks took place a few months after the Israeli airstrike in Doha. The report states that it was “the most high-level meeting between the three countries since the deal to end the war in Gaza, in which Qatar played a key role.”
Secret meeting of three countries for Gaza peace
However, the White House has not yet confirmed the meeting. According to Axios, US envoy Steve Witkoff hosted the meeting, which was also attended by Mossad chief David Barnea from the Israeli side and a senior Qatari official.
Qatar, along with Egypt and the United States, helped negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, a ceasefire that both sides have accused each other of breaking its terms.
What was on the agenda of the meeting?
According to the report, the meeting mainly focused on how to keep the Gaza peace agreement in place despite rising tensions.
Six people were killed in the attack in Qatar's capital, Doha, on September 9. It was strongly criticized by many prominent leaders, including US President Donald Trump.
Following the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at Trump's behest, called al-Thani to apologize for the attack.
Appeal for complete withdrawal of Israeli forces
On Saturday (December 6), Qatar and Egypt pressed for the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and the deployment of an International Stabilization Force to enforce the agreement.
Speaking at a forum in Doha, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said there could be no real ceasefire until Israeli forces were completely withdrawn and stability was restored to Gaza.
