News Topical, Digital Desk : The ongoing diplomatic tension between Iran and Turkey reached a boiling point when Turkey's Defence Ministry claimed that NATO defence systems had destroyed a ballistic missile fired from Iran over the eastern Mediterranean.
While Turkey warned Iran, calling the action a hostile act against its sovereignty, Iran's armed forces completely rejected these claims, saying they had not fired any missiles towards Turkey.
NATO destroyed
In fact, the Turkish Defense Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday, “A ballistic munition fired from Iran, which was observed passing through Iraqi and Syrian airspace towards Turkish airspace, was neutralized in time by NATO air and missile defense assets deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
However, Turkiye also said it was unclear where the missile was aimed. It added that there were no casualties or injuries, and that Ankara reserves the right to respond to any hostile action against it, warning the parties concerned to avoid escalating the conflict.
Turkish President's warning
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, addressing the nation, said the country was taking all necessary precautions in consultation with its NATO allies and issuing clear warnings to prevent such incidents from happening again.
If you want to live in peace and tranquility...
"If we want to live in peace and tranquility as a nation, we must constantly enhance our deterrence capabilities. In these difficult times, we are leaving no stone unturned regarding the security of our borders and airspace," the Turkish President said.
Iran denied
However, following the statement issued by Turkiye, the Iranian Armed Forces responded. The Iranian Armed Forces denied firing any missiles toward Turkiye territory and stressed that Iran respects Turkey's sovereignty.
