News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump is arriving in Britain with his wife Melania Trump. This will be his second visit when he will arrive in Britain, where he will be hosted by Prince Charles.
US presidents have visited Britain before and broken protocols and made mistakes. Trump is one of them. It may have been nervousness at the presence of the royal family or it may have been a simple mistake, but over the years, US presidents and first ladies have made several mistakes in relation to members of the British royal family.
What were the mistakes?
- As President Donald Trump prepares to meet King Charles III in England for a state visit this fall, here's a look back at some famous mistakes, including one made by Trump himself.
- President Jimmy Carter attended a dinner at Buckingham Palace in 1977. The newly elected president was from Georgia and had strong Southern roots. He entered the event with members of the royal family and posed for photos together. It was rumored that Carter kissed the Queen Mother on the lips during the greeting. Carter later said he kissed her on the cheek, but British newspapers ran the story for years.
- President George W. Bush hosted Queen Elizabeth II at the White House in 2007. Upon her arrival, Bush delivered a welcoming speech in which he mispronounced a line and made the Queen look much older than she really was. He then turned to the Queen and the two exchanged amused looks.
- She then added, "She gave me the look only a mother can give her child."
- Then in 2009, when the Obamas met the royal family, First Lady Michelle Obama put her hand on Queen Elizabeth II's back, breaking protocol that the Queen should not be touched unless she makes the move.
- Despite it being Obama's first contact, the Queen also returned the gesture by placing her hand on the First Lady's back.
- President Barack Obama was proposing a toast during a dinner at Buckingham Palace in 2011 when the orchestra unexpectedly began playing "God Save the Queen."
- Instead of stopping his toast until the music finished, the President continued with his speech. As the President finished his toast, the Queen waited for the national anthem to finish before raising her glass.
- In 2018, when Trump and Queen Elizabeth II were inspecting a guard of honor at Windsor Castle, he walked ahead of the Queen and directly into her path.
