Venezuela releases US citizens
The US government announced on Tuesday, January 13, that several American citizens detained in Venezuela have been released. The State Department said, “We welcome the release of American citizens detained in Venezuela. This is an important step in the right direction by the interim authorities.”
The head of Venezuela's National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, made a major announcement following the US attack. Rodriguez said, "In an effort to establish peace after the military campaign that ousted Maduro from power, a significant number of Venezuelans and other foreign citizens imprisoned in the country will be released."
Venezuelan human rights group Forum Penal reported that 56 prisoners detained for political reasons had been released by Tuesday evening. The group criticized the government's lack of transparency regarding the releases. The Venezuelan government rejected the organization's figure, putting the number at 400 on Tuesday afternoon.
