News Topical, Digital Desk : Actress Ulka Gupta, who made her Hindi film debut with The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond, is also working in South Indian cinema. Her upcoming Telugu film is with Bhumika Chawla. Ulka always knew she was destined to act.
Ulka Gupta's father is also an actor.
She says, "Acting is in my blood. I was born into an actor's family. My father, Gagan Gupta, is also an actor. He left Bihar at the age of 15 and came to Mumbai with the dream of becoming an actor. My father has been teaching theater to the three of us siblings from home."
Father teaches acting to children
Sometimes he would say, "I've written a poem, sing it to me," or "show me a dialogue from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose." He would even ask us to act in front of guests. We would act like my father's puppets. I started auditioning at the age of six. Later, I worked in several serials.
Identity was obtained from seven rounds
I started with JD Majethia's serial Reshamdank. In those days, child actors were rarely offered work. After several small roles, I landed the role of Saloni's daughter in the serial Saath Phere. I was inspired by the story, where I saw a dark-skinned female lead for the first time, and the show's anti-racism narrative.
Ulka was selected among 300 girls
Auditioning was difficult in those days. I went through numerous auditions, and then landed the role of Jhansi Ki Rani. I was chosen among 200-300 other girls. My parents have always kept me grounded. I've done Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, and Marathi films. It's my passion for acting that keeps me working in every language. I speak seven languages.
Fan moment with Amitabh
Which actor did she feel like a fan of when working with him? Ulka says, "When I learned Amitabh Bachchan was shooting at Filmistan, I went to meet him there. I never felt like a fan of any other star, because I've had access to them since childhood."
Ulka's father is Shah Rukh's friend
My father is a very good friend of Shah Rukh Khan sir. I've been attending all of his film premieres since childhood, and I've seen many stars there, including Kajol and Rani Mukerji. That exposure has always been there. I learn a lot from South Indian artists. Whether actors or actresses, they live very simply. Anushka Shetty has been a favorite of mine. I played her childhood role in a film.
Ulka Gupta's upcoming film
I'm working on a Telugu film, which marks Bhumika Chawla's comeback. I learn a lot from her. She recommends books to me, telling me to read this and that. We don't use phones on set. Our vanities are nearby, so we spend a lot of time talking.
