News Topical, Digital Desk : The former director of the UN nuclear watchdog on Saturday urged Gulf countries to stop Donald Trump from turning the Middle East into a fireball, following the US president's latest threat to Tehran.

Mohamed ElBaradei, who headed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 1997 to 2009, urged Gulf governments on X to please, once again, do their best before this madness turns the region into a fireball.

Appeal for help from Europe

In another post, al-Baradei also mentioned Trump's ultimatum to Iran that it would face terrible destruction if it did not reach a deal.

He tagged the accounts of the United Nations and the European Union, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron. He also tagged the Chinese and Russian foreign ministries, writing, "Can't anything be done to stop this madness?"

Who is Mohamed El-Baradei?

El-Baradei, 83, who was also a former vice president of Egypt, led the IAEA during the early stages of the public controversy over Iran's nuclear program.

He and his foundation were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for their efforts to promote the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Trump's threat

Trump said in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, that Iran has very little time left to either reach a deal or open the Strait of Hormuz. "Remember, I gave Iran 10 days to either reach a deal or open the Strait of Hormuz. Time is running out, and in 48 hours, they will be damned," he said.
