News Topical, Digital Desk : The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission will hold final hearings on electricity tariffs for the 2026-27 fiscal year in Kanpur on Monday, April 6. Hearings elsewhere have already been completed.

In such a situation, new electricity rates will be announced in the state after this hearing. At the hearing on Monday, Awadhesh Kumar Verma, President of the Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Consumer Council, will present the case on behalf of consumers. He will raise the problems and demands of electricity consumers before the Commission.

Citing the debt consumers owe to power companies of approximately 51,000 crore rupees, the council will strongly demand a reduction in electricity rates. Additionally, the problems faced by consumers due to the smart prepaid meters being installed across the state will also be made a major issue.

Avdhesh Verma alleged that power companies were violating Section 47(5) of the Electricity Act 2003. A contempt petition would also be filed with the Commission regarding this.

Prepaid meters cannot be altered without consent.

He also said that according to a recent statement by the Union Energy Minister, prepaid meters cannot be modified without consumer consent. Despite this, the smart meters of approximately 7 million consumers in the state have been converted to prepaid mode, which is a violation of consumer rights.

There will be demand for immediate reduction in electricity rates, ending the mandatory use of smart prepaid meters, not implementing any new system without consent and withdrawal of the vertical system.
