News Topical, Digital Desk : The Venezuelan government on Thursday requested the UN Security Council to convene an emergency session to focus on US military actions in recent weeks in the South American country's coastal waters.

Venezuela made the request in a letter addressed to Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations and president of the council. The letter accused US President Donald Trump's administration of attempting to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and threatening peace, security and stability at the regional and international levels.

Venezuela government fears attack

The Maduro government has also expressed fears of an armed attack on Venezuela. The request comes a day after Congress rejected a bill that would have restricted Trump's ability to use lethal military force against drug traffickers.

Trump attacks drug cartels

Trump declared an armed conflict with the drug cartels, and the US military has carried out four deadly attacks in the Caribbean since the naval deployment. However, the Maduro government says the White House is merely raising the issue of drug trafficking as a pretext for the operation.
