UP PWD sets record by spending 86% of budget despite surrendering Rs 2500 crore

News Topical, Digital Desk : Due to the failure to begin construction of the Malviya Bridge in Varanasi, the state government has had to surrender ₹1,500 crore approved for this purpose. Additionally, approximately ₹1,000 crore has been surrendered due to insufficient funds from NABARD and the Central Road Fund.

The Public Works Department has had to surrender approximately 2,500 crore rupees for these three projects. On the other hand, thanks to the Chief Minister's constant monitoring, the department has successfully spent 94 percent of the remaining allocated budget of 29,723 crore rupees and 85.95 percent of the total budget of 32,676.49 crore rupees for development works.

This fiscal year, the department received a budget of ₹36,293.95, including establishment expenses, of which ₹30,581.98 crore, representing 84.26 percent, was spent. Excluding establishment expenses, the department was allocated ₹32,676.49 crore for development, of which ₹28,086.82 crore, representing 85.95 percent, was spent.

After two years, the department has succeeded in spending the budget to this level. Previously, only 81 percent of the budget was spent on development projects in 2023-24 and 78 percent in 2024-25. The department considers this amount spent a record.

Credit for this is being given to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the department's Principal Secretary, Ajay Chauhan. For the past two months, field officials have been instructed via video conferencing to expedite the budget expenditure.

Development work will begin in May this year.
PWD department head AK Dwivedi has said that now work will be done with the aim of spending 100% of the budget in the financial year 2026-27. The work of preparing the action plan for this financial year will be completed this month. The work of issuing financial approvals for starting the work will begin in May. The remaining works proposed by dignitaries in the last financial year will be done on priority basis this year.
