News Topical, Digital Desk : Panchayat elections are scheduled for 2026 in Uttar Pradesh. However, experts believe this election could be delayed. The Panchayat elections held in May 2021 were also delayed due to  the coronavirus pandemic.

Now, there are claims that the elections, scheduled for April-May this year, may be delayed again. In fact, before every Panchayat election, a Backward Classes Commission is formed, which determines the reservation of seats in Gram Panchayats, Nagar Panchayats, and District Panchayats. First, a provisional list is released, and if anyone has any objections, a certain period is given. After that, the final list is released.

The entire reservation process takes approximately three to five months. Experts say that even if the commission is formed in March, it will still take until July 2026. Elections could then be postponed to September or October.

Why is there a problem in Panchayat elections in UP before the UP Assembly elections?

If panchayat elections are held in Uttar Pradesh between September and October, political parties will not have time to prepare for the assembly elections scheduled for January 2027. More than just time for preparation, it is crucial for political parties to handle these panchayat elections, considered the semi-finals of the power struggle, without any internal conflict.

However, given past experiences, the internal conflicts within each party are always exposed to the public during Panchayat elections. Therefore, contesting the Assembly elections immediately after the Panchayat elections will be a litmus test for political parties.

Will Panchayat elections be held after the 2027 elections?

According to experts, the Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh will only begin after the 2027 elections. Sources suggest that Panchayat and municipal elections may be held simultaneously in separate phases. While village heads will be elected, cities may elect chairmen and mayors. Sources suggest that both elections will be held simultaneously in 2027 or 2028, which could serve as a litmus test for the One Nation, One Election in a large state like Uttar Pradesh.

No one is willing to comment on whether the Panchayat elections will be held on time, just before or after the Assembly elections. Neither political parties nor officials are willing to comment. What is certain is that if these elections are not held on time, the village government will be in the hands of the secretary until the next election, and the District Magistrate will be in charge of the district panchayat as administrator.
