News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump has decided to withdraw the US from over 60 international organisations, including several UN-affiliated bodies as well as the India-France-led International Solar Alliance (ISA).

The Trump administration has called these organizations unnecessary and inimical to US interests. According to PTI, President Trump on Wednesday signed a memorandum "withdrawing from international organizations, conventions, and treaties that are contrary to the interests of the United States." He then stated that it is inimical to the US's interests to maintain membership in, participate in, or provide any support to 66 UN and non-UN organizations.

From which organizations is America withdrawing?

According to a fact sheet released by the White House, the organizations from which the US is withdrawing include 31 UN entities and 35 non-UN organizations, which have been accused of operating contrary to US national security, economic prosperity, and sovereignty.

What did the United Nations say?

A UN spokesperson said they had received the full list of organizations from the US and would respond on Thursday. Meanwhile, US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said the US would no longer fund or participate in international organizations that do not serve or work against US interests.

India adopted a balancing strategy. ISA is headquartered in Gurugram, and India intends to establish it in the future like the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Given the sensitivity of many issues with the US, India did not comment on this issue on Thursday. There is talk that America's withdrawal from ISA is likely to have a direct impact on India.

India wants to move forward with steady steps

India wants to move forward with measured steps. It neither wants to give the US any additional opportunity nor appear to be bowing to pressure. A significant Indian population also resides in the US. The Trump administration's withdrawal from the ISA will increase the challenge. However, experts say that the withdrawal of a major country like the US will increase the challenge of raising funds for the organization.

What is the goal of IS?

The United States has been an active member of the ISA. The ISA has set a goal of installing 195,000 megawatts of solar power worldwide by 2030. It has begun assisting both developed and poor countries in deploying solar energy technologies. The ISA aims to raise $1 trillion in funding.

ISA officials have stated that their organization will continue to operate as before. Within a short time, ISA has grown to over 121 members. India will establish another international cooperation organization in the field of clean fuels, the Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA), in 2023. The United States is also a member of this organization.
