News Topical, Digital Desk : An alleged act of vandalism disrupted the "World Cultural Festival" held at MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU) in Kothrud. Members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), allegedly vandalized a Bangladeshi food stall on campus and set the Bangladesh flag on fire. The incident created a tense atmosphere in the area.

According to preliminary information, the incident occurred during an annual cultural event showcasing food, music, and traditions from various countries, attended by Indian and international students. Police have launched an investigation into the matter. CCTV footage from the incident is being examined. Police have assured appropriate action against those involved.  

What did the eyewitnesses say about the incident?

Eyewitnesses said some youths entered the university campus and targeted the stall representing Bangladesh, causing chaos among students and organizers. Activists also shouted slogans against Bangladesh's anti-national stance.

He further said that the World Cultural Festival is an annual event that aims to celebrate cultural diversity and provide a platform for international students to showcase their traditions, similar to the events organised every year by other universities in Pune.

What does the university have to say on the matter?

Regarding the matter, the university said that it is committed to ensuring a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for all, while on the other hand, police officials said that they are verifying the details of the incident and will take appropriate action against the culprits after reviewing the CCTV footage and eyewitness statements.
