News Topical, Digital Desk : The Shivalinga is worshipped. While offerings of Bel leaves, Ganga water, milk, and honey are common during Shivalinga worship (Shivling Puja Niyam), scriptures also describe certain items that should never be offered to the Shivalinga. There are some beliefs behind this.

This is why Tulsi is not offered

While Tulsi is a mandatory offering to Lord Vishnu, offering it to Shivalinga is prohibited. There's a mythological story behind this, according to which Vrinda, known today as Tulsi , was a devoted wife of the demon Jalandhar.

Due to her devotion to her husband, Jalandhar was difficult to defeat. Therefore, Lord Vishnu deceitfully violated Vrinda's devotion to her husband, and Lord Shiva killed Jalandhar. This is why offering Tulsi to the Shivalinga is prohibited.

This is how the conch shell originated

Using a conch shell in the worship of Shivalinga is also considered inauspicious. There's a mythological story behind this, according to which, in ancient times, all the gods were troubled by a demon named Shankhachud. Lord Shiva burned the demon to ashes with his trident. The conch shell was created from those ashes. Therefore, offering water from a conch shell during Shiva's worship is prohibited.

Ketaki flower had received this curse

Offering Ketaki flowers to the Shivalinga is also considered inauspicious. The mythological reason for this is that Shiva prohibited Ketaki flowers from his worship because they were witnesses to Brahma's lies.

Do not offer these things

According to religious beliefs, one should never offer vermilion, turmeric, coconut water, or broken rice to Lord Shiva. Doing so is considered inauspicious at all. Offering these items to the Shivalinga does not bring the full benefits of your worship.
