News Topical, Digital Desk : The Scheduled Caste (SC) population in the state is approximately 34 percent. This makes this community a crucial candidate in the elections. Consequently, all major parties are working to woo this vote bank. Recently, various parties have increased their activism around issues and personalities related to the SC community.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has attempted to woo this segment by honoring Sant Niranjan Das, head of Dera Sachkhand Ballan. The Aam Aadmi Party has also demanded the Bharat Ratna for Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram. AAP has passed a resolution in the Assembly, which was also supported by the Congress. This clearly shows that all parties are engaged in wooing this segment.
Punjab has more than 34 percent of the country's Scheduled Caste population.
While the demand for the Bharat Ratna is usually raised from a political platform, this time the AAP adopted a different strategy by introducing the proposal in the Assembly. State Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, who himself comes from the community, introduced the proposal in the Assembly.
It should be noted that Punjab has over 34 percent of the country's population. Furthermore, 34 seats in the Legislative Assembly are reserved for the SC category. This makes the SC vote bank crucial for political parties to gain power in the state. Congress has long dominated the Scheduled Caste vote in Punjab. Now, parties are attempting to woo this community on both a social and ideological level.
Aam Aadmi Party prepares for 2027 with the 'Bahujan' community
AAP has never made such a demand in the Assembly during its four-year tenure. This clearly indicates that the Aam Aadmi Party is preparing for 2027 by engaging the "Bahujan" community. One reason for this is that on February 1st, Prime Minister Modi himself visited Ballabh to seek the blessings of Sant Niranjan Das. The central government has also named Adampur Airport after Guru Ravidas. This move by the BJP has created a stir within AAP and the Congress.
