News Topical, Digital Desk : Battle Beyond Cancer: A man living in the US state of North Carolina has battled the deadly disease cancer five times and is now using his experience to raise awareness about getting screened early. David and Pat Penny of Johnston County have been married for over 51 years.

David served in the military and later as a firefighter. He has battled cancer five times, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, sarcoma, and most recently, male-onset breast cancer, which is more severe in men and has a incidence of only about 1%, as reported by People.com.

It was difficult to save at the age of 30

Pat says her husband was a difficult man to save at just 30 years old, but he remains a symbol of incredible courage and perseverance. Pat always calls him "the ever-ready bunny" because he's always active and full of energy.

David discovered his cancer in the spring of 2025 when he felt a small lump in his chest while self-examing. He found it unusual. He had a lumpectomy the following week, and now all his tests are clear.

Awareness leads to timely victory over cancer

Pat was diagnosed with breast cancer during a routine mammogram in 2009 at the age of 56. She said that getting an appointment on time saved her life, as the cancer had spread to deeper parts of her body and if she had noticed it herself, it might have been too late.

Today, both David and Pat volunteer for the American Cancer Society. They share their story on social media to encourage others to be aware of their bodies and schedule regular health checkups. David says that no one knows your body better than you do. If you notice something is wrong, don't put it off for a week or two.
