News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he would send Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine and hinted at new sanctions on Russia.
Trump once again expressed his displeasure over Russian President Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine. He said that he talks sweetly but then drops bombs.
Ukraine and Russia have been at war for more than three years. Trump said, "We will send Ukraine the Patriot system, which they desperately need." However, he did not say how many weapons would be sent.
The number of weapons I will send has not been decided yet: Donald Trump
"I haven't decided on the number of weapons yet, but Ukraine will get something for its security," Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews after watching the FIFA Club World Cup final in New Jersey.
Along with this, the White House reversed the earlier announcement that it would stop supplying weapons to Ukraine. Now the new plan is that NATO will pay the full amount for the weapons to America.
Calling it a business opportunity, Trump said, "We will send many types of modern weapons to Ukraine and we will get 100 percent money for it."
On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was close to a "multi-level agreement" for Patriot systems and missiles.
Trump is angry with Putin, preparing for sanctions
Trump took a dig at Putin and said, “Putin has surprised many people. He talks sweetly and bombs everybody at night.”
After becoming president in January, Trump claimed he could end the war with Putin but Russia rejected the US and Ukraine ceasefire proposal.
Now Trump has indicated that he may impose tough sanctions on Russia. He is scheduled to meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Monday. Trump said, "See what happens tomorrow."
On the other hand, US senators talked about a new bill, which will give Trump the power to impose massive sanctions against Russia.
Preparations to crack down on Russia
Senator Lindsey Graham said the bill would give Trump the power to crack down on Russia's economy and countries that are supporting Russia, such as China, India or Brazil.
Graham called it a "hammer to end the war." Zelensky praised the bill, saying it was an important step towards peace.
Senator Richard Blumenthal said that the time has come to use Russian assets stored in Europe and America for Ukraine.
He said the $5 billion the US has stashed away in Ukraine should be released now. Graham and Blumenthal will also meet with Rutte on Monday.
