Shabana Azmi has revealed that a veteran Hindi cinema director used to force her to eat sitting on the floor. Let's explore the reasons behind this. 

Why did Shabana Azmi eat food sitting on the ground?

A good director knows how to cast actors in their roles and enhance their performances. According to actress Shabana Azmi, the late filmmaker Shyam Benegal had a unique, nuanced, and effective approach. Shabana, who made her directorial debut with the 1974 film Ankur, shares an anecdote from that film:

“Shyam Benegal was a very nice, loving, and intelligent man. For the first time in my life, I visited Yella Reddy Guda village, about 30 kilometers from Hyderabad. When I got there, he told me to walk around wearing a sari like the village women, so I would become comfortable with it.”

Now, the problem was that I couldn't sit squatting (with both knees bent), and I had to sit squatting for 60 percent of the film. So Shyam told me, "We'll eat here at the table. You can sit squatting on the floor there, and you'll get food there." After four or five days of shooting, some college boys came to the set. They saw me and asked, “Where's the heroine?”

I said it was her day off, and she wasn't there. Then they asked who I was, and I said, "I'm the maid." Then they left. Shyam Benegal was watching this with a sideways glance. Then he said, "You've convinced those kids that you're a maid. Now you can come and sit with us and eat at the table."
