News Topical, Digital Desk : Liver diseases are becoming increasingly common worldwide. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, in particular, has become a rapidly growing health problem. Experts believe that this disease is often linked to lifestyle and dietary habits. Some experts also warn that pedal edema, or swollen buttocks, may be an early and often overlooked symptom of fatty liver.
Pedal edema indicating swelling of the feet
According to experts, the initial sign of fatty liver, swelling of the legs or pedal edema, is often overlooked. Experts say that if fatty liver is not treated in time, it can gradually progress to serious liver diseases like cirrhosis or cancer. Fatty liver or hepatic steatosis is a condition in which excess fat accumulates in the liver. While small levels of fat are considered normal, excessive fat can affect liver function. NAFLD is generally associated with obesity, diabetes, poor diet, and physical inactivity. If it is not controlled in time, it can progress to serious diseases like NASH (cirrhosis) and liver cancer.
How to recognize pedal edema?
Pedal edema can be easily tested at home. Apply pressure to your feet, especially above the ankles, for a few seconds. If, after removing the pressure, a dimple or pit remains on your skin, this is called pitting edema. Experts advise against dismissing swollen feet as simply the result of prolonged standing or walking; it could be an early sign of liver damage.
Prevention through timely treatment
Experts say don't wait for fatty liver symptoms to develop; early detection and timely treatment can save your liver and even your life.
