The accused woman has been identified as Vilawan Amsawat, who was arrested by the police on Tuesday from Nonthaburi province, a short distance from the capital Bangkok. The scandal has revealed the names of at least 9 Buddhist monks who have been expelled from the monastery.

Vilawan is around 35 years old. A case has been registered against Vilawan under the charges of blackmailing, money laundering and theft. When the police searched Vilawan's phone after his arrest, shocking things started coming out one after the other. Vilawan had chatted with many Buddhist monks. Also, a lot of photos and videos have been found in his phone. While talking to the local media, the woman has admitted to having an affair with a Buddhist monk.

According to Central Bureau of Investigation Deputy Commissioner Jaroonkiat Pankaev, the case came to light when the abbot suddenly announced his resignation. Police investigation revealed that Vilawan was blackmailing the abbot. She was in a relationship with the abbot and claimed that she was pregnant. In return, she had demanded 222,000 US dollars (Rs 1.85 crore) from the abbot.
102 crore rupees came in the bank
According to Jaroonkiat, after searching Vilawan's phone and bank account, it was found that in the last three years, he has received 11.9 million US dollars (102.33 crores rupees) in his account and most of this money has been transferred by Buddhist monks. After this case came to light, questions have also started being raised on the monastery administration of Thailand.

Actually, Theravada sect is dominated by Buddhist monks in Thailand. Buddhist monks belonging to this sect have to follow celibacy and touching women is considered a crime. Huge donations are made to the Buddhist monasteries of Thailand and all this money remains with the Buddhist monks, abbots and the monastery. After the Vilawan case came to light, people are demanding transparency in the monasteries.
