News Topical, Digital Desk : A cold wave continues to grip the Kashmir Valley, with temperatures dropping several degrees below the freezing point . Srinagar recorded its coldest night of the season on Friday (January 9), freezing several water bodies in the valley, including the inner parts of the world-famous Dal Lake.

Record low in Srinagar According to officials, the minimum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at minus 6.0 degrees Celsius on Thursday night. This was even lower than the previous night (minus 5.1 degrees Celsius). The city's minimum temperature was 4.1 degrees below normal, the lowest so far this winter season.

Condition of tourist places: Pahalgam is the coldest

Pahalgam : This famous tourist destination in South Kashmir was the coldest place in the Union Territory, where the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 7.6 degrees Celsius.

Gulmarg: The night temperature in this ski resort in North Kashmir was minus 7.2 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund: Qazigund, the gateway to the valley, also recorded the season's lowest temperature of minus 6.2 degrees Celsius.

Other places: Kupwara recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.8 degrees Celsius, Sonamarg minus 5.4 degrees Celsius and Kokernag minus 3.2 degrees Celsius .

Effect of ' Chilla-e-Kalan' and waiting for snowfall

Kashmir is currently in the grip of "Chilla-e-Kalan," a 40-day period of extreme cold. This period began on December 21st and will end on January 29th, 2026. Although snowfall is most likely during this period, the plains of the valley have not seen any snowfall so far this year.

Meteorological Department forecast

According to the India Meteorological Department ( IMD) , the weather will remain mainly dry until January 21, although clouds may remain. The department warned that night temperatures may drop further until January 10, after which a slight increase of one to two degrees in minimum temperatures is expected.
