News Topical, Digital Desk : Scientists at IISER have discovered a new way to treat cancer. They have created a friendly bacterium that can directly target and destroy cancer tumors. This discovery is significant because cancer remains difficult to treat, especially when the body's own immune system fails to fight it.

A new way to fight cancer

Cancer treatment is often very difficult because cancer cells deceive our immune system. They hide behind special cells called T regulatory cells, preventing our body from recognizing and attacking them. This is why treatments like chemotherapy and immunotherapy are sometimes not fully effective.

A team at IISER Kolkata has found a unique solution to this challenge. They have created friendly bacteria (probiotics) that can detect and inhibit tumor activity. These bacteria are essentially live, targeted drugs that directly attack cancer cells and reactivate our immune system.

Big hope from 'Reset' project

This particular project is called "RESET," which stands for "Programming the Suppressive Environment of the Tumor Microenvironment." This project could be a game-changer in cancer treatment . The team is also working on a system that will measure how well a treatment is working.

A young team of 11 IISER students is set to present their groundbreaking work at the world's largest synthetic biology competition, the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM), in October this year. This is a matter of pride not only for their institute but for India as a whole. This new experiment marks a new dawn in cancer treatment, giving us even greater strength in our fight against this disease.
