Elections amid democratic concerns

Speaking in the UK Parliament, Bob Blackman warned that Bangladesh's national elections on February 12th are being held amid democratic concerns. Sheikh Hasina's Awami League, a major political party, has been barred from contesting the elections. The Awami League, despite winning nearly 30 percent of the vote in opinion polls, is barred from participating. Similarly, Islamic extremists have demanded a referendum that would forever change Bangladesh's constitution.

Blackman further said, "In the debate before the House recess, I raised the situation in Bangladesh, and the Leader of the House quite rightly wrote to the Foreign Secretary about the appalling situation there. Hindu men are being murdered in the streets, their homes are being burned, temples are being destroyed, and other religious minorities are facing the same fate."

The British MP called on the British Foreign Secretary to issue an official statement outlining what action the UK government will take to protect minorities across Bangladesh and ensure free, fair and inclusive elections in the South Asian country.

Let us tell you that last week also four British MPs had expressed serious concern about the ban on widely supported political parties under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh ahead of the elections to be held in February, saying that this move disregards the guidelines of the United Nations as well as Britain and other long-term partners of the South Asian nation.
