A Russian general was killed by a bomb in his car in Moscow on Friday, the second such attack on a top Russian military official in four months. Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalyk, deputy chief of the Main Operations Department at the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, was killed in Moscow's Balashikha, the top criminal investigation agency said. The blast came just days before US President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witcalf was scheduled to meet Vladimir Putin to discuss a brokered peace plan for Ukraine.
Evidence of use of IED was found from the spot
Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said the explosives were laced with shrapnel. She said investigators were at the scene. The committee did not mention possible suspects. The attack comes after the assassination of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov. The explosion sent the car flying several meters into the air. Evidence of the use of IEDs was found at the scene after the blast.
He died on December 17 when a bomb hidden on an electric scooter parked outside his apartment exploded while he was on his way to office.
Russian authorities blamed Ukraine for Kirillov's killing and Ukraine's security agency acknowledged it was behind the attack.
Five killed in Russian attack on Ukraine
Ukrainian officials said on Friday that five people, including a child, had been killed in new attacks by Russia. Serhiy Lysak, the governor of the central Dnipropetrovsk region, said three people were killed in the city of Pavlohrad after a drone strike.
This incident has happened at a time when just a day earlier, US President Donald Trump, after the deadly missile and drone attack on Kiev, had written in a harsh tone in an internet media message addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin - 'Vladimir, stop!'
