News Topical, Digital Desk : China's role in the two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran is emerging. It is being reported that China worked behind the scenes to prepare Iran for negotiations. Although Beijing has not openly acknowledged its role, numerous reports have documented its active diplomatic efforts.

US President Donald Trump has hinted that China played a role in bringing Iran to the negotiating table. When asked about this, he said he had received information that China helped.

Iran is a major trading partner of China, so it was crucial for Beijing that the war end quickly and stability return to the region. Furthermore, Trump's scheduled visit to China in May was being postponed due to the war. China also wanted the situation to return to normal quickly.

China's behind-the-scenes diplomacy

According to reports, China worked toward peace without directly engaging. It pressured Iran to negotiate through countries like Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt. According to sources, Chinese officials were in constant contact with Iranian officials while the negotiations between the US and Iran were underway. Thus, China played a quiet but influential role, helping to persuade both sides to negotiate.

Although China has not officially issued any major statement about its role, the Chinese Embassy in Washington previously stated that China has been continuously working for peace since the war began.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning also said that all parties should show sincerity and end the war as soon as possible. She also said that the conflict poses a serious concern to the global economy and energy security.

The stance was also shown in the United Nations

China also made its stance clear on the international stage. It joined Russia in vetoing a resolution at the United Nations that called for cooperation among nations to protect merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Fu Cong, China's representative to the UN, said that introducing this resolution at a time when the United States itself was threatening major attacks did not send the right message.
