News Topical, Digital Desk : Pakistani officials have said that they are in no hurry to recognize the Afghan Taliban government. They will take any decision keeping in mind the national interest. This comment comes a few days after Russia became the first country to officially recognize the Taliban regime.

Observers believe Moscow’s decision could be a prelude to the eventual embracing of the Taliban by other countries.

'Russia's decision is no surprise'

Pakistani officials told The Express Tribune newspaper that Russia's decision was not a surprise, as Moscow had indicated some time ago that they would accept the fact that the Taliban were now in power. There was no option but to accept their rule.

Russia's decision also stems from the fact that greater engagement with the Taliban government would help combat the terrorist threat and advance its geostrategic interests.

What did the Pakistani official say?

A Pakistani official, when asked whether Islamabad would also recognise the Taliban regime, said, "We will definitely take a decision keeping in mind our interests. I can tell you there is no hurry in this." However, a source has not ruled out the possibility that Pakistan may take a more pragmatic stance if other regional countries follow in Russia's footsteps.
