News Topical, Digital Desk : Bangladesh's new Prime Minister Tariq Rahman has allocated portfolios to his cabinet ministers. He has assigned the Foreign Ministry to Khalilur Rahman, who previously served as National Security Advisor (NSA) in the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
Tarique Rahman was sworn in as Prime Minister on Tuesday. A 49-member cabinet was also sworn in alongside him. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has returned to power in the country after 20 years. The Prime Minister appointed senior BNP leader Shama Ubaid as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. She has previously served on the BNP's international affairs subcommittee.
The government issued an order
Following the portfolio allocation, the government issued an official order stating that Prime Minister Tariq Rahman retained responsibility for three departments, including the Defense Ministry. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was given the Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry.
BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has been given the finance and planning ministries, while BNP Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed has been given the home ministry. 60-year-old Tariq, who became prime minister for the first time, is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
The election was held on February 12.
The first general elections were held on February 12 after the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5, 2024, due to the student movement, in which the BNP won two-thirds of the seats.
