News Topical, Digital Desk : Amid the US government's crackdown on colleges, a Hong Kong university has promised an 'unconditional offer' to international students at Harvard University.

According to Newsweek, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) said it will offer help to students who are unable to enrol for the next academic year. HKUST said the university will prioritise early admission, credit transfer and provide support to students including visa assistance and accommodation.

HKUST statement

"Diversity fosters creativity and progress. We look forward to welcoming Harvard students to our university and providing them with the resources and environment they need to advance in their fields," HKUST Provost Guo Yik said, according to Newsweek.

HKUST's offer comes after the Chinese government criticized the US government for blocking foreign student enrollment and student exchange programs at Harvard University. More than a thousand Chinese students currently study at the Ivy League school, the outlet reported.

What is the decision of the Trump government?

Making the announcement on Thursday, the US Department of Homeland Security said Harvard had created an unsafe campus environment by allowing "anti-American, pro-terrorism agitators" to harass and attack Jewish students on its campus.

The US administration has also accused Harvard of coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party and said it hosted and trained members of a Chinese paramilitary group last year.

What did the Harvard spokesperson say?

On the other hand, Harvard University called the US government's move to ban foreign students illegal. Harvard spokesperson Jason Newton said in a statement, "We are fully committed to maintaining Harvard's ability to host international students and scholars from more than 140 countries."

Meanwhile, critics have warned that the US government's move could deter top talent from overseas from studying in the US. Therefore, HKUST's offer indicates that a growing number of international students may choose top institutions in China, Hong Kong and other places.
