Scenes of destroyed houses, overflowing rivers and uprooted trees were seen after massive landslides hit villages located on higher altitudes in Wayanad, Kerala on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Home Minister Amit Shah have expressed concern over the people trapped in the landslides.
A roadmap should be prepared for the rehabilitation of the affected families: Rahul Gandhi
45 people have died due to landslides caused by heavy rains in Wayanad, Kerala. Regarding the landslides, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said, "Several devastating landslides occurred in Wayanad early this morning. Mundakkai village has been cut off and the loss of lives and extensive damage is yet to be assessed due to the scale of the tragedy."
Rahul Gandhi further said, "I have spoken to the Defense Minister and the Chief Minister of Kerala. I request the central government to provide all possible assistance for rescue and medical care, immediate compensation should be given to the deceased. At the same time, if the compensation can be increased, it should be increased. Important transport and communication lines should be restored, relief should be arranged as soon as possible and a roadmap should be prepared for the rehabilitation of the affected families."
Rahul Gandhi further said that even as I speak, Wayanad and many areas of the Western Ghats are facing the threat of landslides. Our country has witnessed an alarming increase in landslides in the last few years. There is an urgent need to map landslide-prone areas and create mitigation measures and action plans to address the increasing frequency of natural disasters in the ecologically vulnerable region.
