News Topical, Digital Desk : A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck the Indian Ocean on Sunday. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at a depth of 90 kilometers below sea level. No damage or casualties have been reported so far. The earthquake, which occurred at 5:39 am, is said to be minor, and no tsunami warning has been issued in the area.

The area is geologically active, and this recent event reflects movement beneath the sea, although no major damage has been reported at this time.

What is the depth range of an earthquake?

Earthquakes can occur anywhere between the Earth's surface and about 700 kilometers below the surface. For scientific purposes, this 0-700 kilometer depth range is divided into three zones: shallow, intermediate, and deep, according to USGS data.

Shallow earthquakes occur between 0 and 70 kilometers in depth. Intermediate earthquakes occur at depths of 70 to 300 kilometers, and deep earthquakes occur at depths of 300 to 700 kilometers. According to the USGS, the term deep-center earthquake is generally used for earthquakes that are deeper than 70 kilometers.

The 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and tsunami wreaked havoc.

Previously, on December 26, 2004, at 07:58:53 local time, an earthquake of magnitude 9.2–9.3 struck off the west coast of Aceh in North Sumatra, Indonesia, with its epicenter in the sea.

This massive undersea earthquake, known in the scientific community as the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, was caused by a rupture in the fault line between the Burma Plate and the Indian Plate, and reached Mercalli intensity IX in some areas.

The earthquake caused a massive tsunami, with waves up to 30 meters (100 feet) high. This tsunami is known as the Boxing Day tsunami or the Asian tsunami, after the Boxing Day holiday.

It devastated communities along the coasts of the Indian Ocean, killing approximately 227,898 people in 14 countries, including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
