New Delhi. Due to the increasing heat in Leh, flights are facing a lot of trouble in taking off at the airport. Meanwhile, Indigo and SpiceJet have canceled four flights at Leh airport. AAI official has given this information. Since July 27, at least 16 flights have been canceled due to high temperatures in Ladakh. Flights are canceled when the mercury goes above 32 degrees Celsius at Leh airport.
According to airport sources, "This is probably the first time that flights are being cancelled at Leh airport due to bad weather." Airport sources said, we do not remember any such example in the past where flights have been cancelled for so many consecutive days. For the past few days, the temperature in Leh has been reaching 36 degrees Celsius.
Why are flights getting cancelled in Leh?
- Leh is located at an altitude of about 10,700 feet above sea level.
- As the altitude increases, the density of air decreases
- As the temperature increases, the density decreases further due to being at higher altitude.
- A320, B737 engines take longer to reach lift-off speed when temperature reaches 36 degrees.
- As the temperature reaches 36 degrees Celsius, the air density is decreasing, hence it is not safe for the plane to fly.
15-16 planes fly to and from Leh
Leh has 15-16 arrivals and an equal number of departures per day. It is at an altitude of 10,700 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest airfields in the world. The heat is a deadly cocktail for aircraft engines.
