News Topical, Digital Desk : A big news related to the Indian Navy has come to light. The Indian Navy is preparing to induct 2 frontline warships Udayagiri (F 35) and Himgiri (F 34) into the Navy simultaneously on 26 August 2025.
This is the first time that two major surface combat ships from 2 prestigious Indian shipyards are being commissioned at the same time in Visakhapatnam. Looking at this move of the Navy, it seems that the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives in the defense sector are succeeding.
Who built Udayagiri and Himgiri?
Udaygiri, the second ship of the Project 17A stealth frigates, is built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. Himgiri is the first of the P17A ships built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.
Another major achievement for the Indian Navy is that Udaygiri is the 100th ship designed by the Naval Warship Design Bureau.
These warships are special
With a displacement of approximately 6,700 tonnes, the P17A frigates are about five per cent larger than their predecessor Shivalik-class frigates yet have a more streamlined shape, and a lower radar cross section.
They are powered by combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion plants, using diesel engines and gas turbines driving controllable-pitch propellers and managed through an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS).
The weapon suite includes supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, 76 mm MR guns and a combination of 30 mm and 12.7 mm close-in weapon systems and anti-submarine/underwater weapon systems.
A proud example of self-reliance
The construction of Udayagiri and Himgiri reflects the Navy's commitment to self-reliance. Other indigenous ships, such as the destroyer INS Surat, the frigate INS Nilgiri, the submarine INS Vagsheer, the shallow water submarine INS Arnala and the diving support vessel INS Nistar, will be launched only in 2025.
