News Topical, Digital Desk : While offering fruits, we often ensure that they are fresh, but did you know that according to scriptures, there are certain fruits and methods that are considered prohibited for offering to Goddess Durga?

Goddess Durga is considered a symbol of power and purity. Therefore, tamasic or impure things have no place in her worship.

  • Never offer fruit that is cut or pecked by a bird. This is considered impure.
  • The fruits which fall on the ground after breaking from the tree on their own are not considered worthy of worship in the scriptures.
  • While worshipping the gentle form of the Mother Goddess, one should avoid offering lemon (during Shanti Path) or very sour and tasteless fruits.
  • Fruits may look beautiful on the outside, but check them carefully. If there's a worm inside, that offering is unacceptable.

Where is this written?

Major Hindu texts such as the Markandeya Purana and the Devi Purana detail what is and isn't acceptable to Goddess Durga. Furthermore, texts such as the Achar Bhushan emphasize the purity of worship materials. According to the scriptures, offering food to God that we cannot eat ourselves or that is impure is considered a sin.

Some special rules for enjoyment and fasting

  • Always offer food to the Mother Goddess in pure copper, silver, brass, or clay vessels. The use of plastic or glass utensils is prohibited.
  • If you are preparing Halwa-Poori or Kheer at home, then keep in mind that it should not even have a touch of salt or garlic-onion.
  • Use only coconuts with tatha (roots) for the Kalash installation during Navratri. If the coconut turns out to be rotten inside, don't panic; simply float it in running water and ask the Goddess for forgiveness.
