Some MAGA (Make America Great Again) supporters claimed Mamdani's gesture resembled a Nazi salute. Some even compared it to a gesture made by billionaire Elon Musk during an inaugural rally for President Donald Trump on January 20, 2025.

Internet users pointed out that the gesture occurred when Mamdani was emphasizing a point while addressing a crowd.

In the viral clip, Mamdani is seen smiling and thanking the crowd. He places his right hand on his chest before waving. An internet user posted the viral clip of Mamdani on Instagram and wrote, "When Alan shows his sympathy for the crowd, he gets called a 'Nazi.' When Mamdani does it, it's perfectly fine."
Another user wrote, "I'm shaking. Zohran Mamdani just did the Nazi salute. Rules are rules. Cancel him." Contradicting MAGA supporters, others defended Mamdani's gesture, calling the movement a rousing gesture typically used during speeches.
