The accused, Rohit Arya, lured children under the pretext of a web series audition and later held them hostage. He attacked police. He was injured in police retaliation and died during treatment. By 8 a.m., all the children and the accused, Rohit Arya, had reached the studio in Powai.
The accused called the children inside, locked the door, and after some time sent a video to the parents present. He said, "Share this video on social media." The video spread panic among the parents and caused a stir in the society.
Society member gave information to the police
Around 1:30 pm, a member of the society reached the Powai police station and reported the incident. A police team immediately arrived at RA Studios. The police and the accused had a phone conversation that lasted for about an hour.
The accused was initially cooperating with the police
Initially, the accused was listening to the police and cooperating. He even mentioned Deepak Kesarkar's name during the conversation. He said, "I don't trust you."
The last call was made to the accused at 2 o'clock
When the accused stopped cooperating, the police began planning a strategy to break in. The accused was called one last time at 2 p.m. He was told, "Your demands will be met, just release the children."
The accused was also made to talk to his family members
The police even arranged for the accused to speak with his family, but to no avail. Planning for the operation began around 3 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., police began breaking down the grill, and at 4:30 p.m., the police team entered. Once inside, the police discovered that the accused had divided the children into two groups: eight children were locked in one room, while the other group was kept with him.
Police entered the studio with the bathroom
The accused had sprayed chemicals all over the floor where he was present, making the situation even more dangerous. A police team entered the studio through the bathroom. At the head was API Amol Waghmare, who was dressed in civilian clothes. Because of his civilian attire, the accused did not recognize him as police.
The accused was shocked to see the police
As soon as the police entered, the accused asked, "Who are you? How did you get in?" He then leaned into his bag to retrieve something. At that moment, API Amol Waghmare fired a round in retaliation, hitting Rohit Arya in the right side of his chest.
According to the police, the shooting was from a 9mm pistol and only one round was fired. The injured accused, Rohit Arya, was taken to a hospital, where he died during treatment.
The investigation revealed that the accused had posted an advertisement for a web series audition on social media. The auditions had been ongoing for the past four days. 17 children were selected for the final list.
