News Topical, Digital Desk : People's Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday (January 27) strongly condemned the vandalism at the tomb of renowned Sufi poet Baba Bulleh Shah in Uttarakhand. Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of adopting "double standards," Mufti said the central government's ruling party feigns cultural integration abroad while promoting the politics of hatred within the country.
Mehbooba Mufti targeted the BJP leadership in a social media post. She alleged that BJP leaders visit mosques abroad, pose for photo ops, and roll out the red carpet for Middle Eastern sheikhs, but remain silent when symbols of humanity like Baba Bulleh Shah are targeted in India. Mufti called this a "deliberate political strategy" by the party.
A conspiracy to divert attention from the real issues
In her post, the PDP president made serious allegations, saying that there is a widespread pattern of targeting Sufi shrines and symbols of coexistence. She said, "It is easier to destroy symbols of harmony than to address serious socio-economic issues like unemployment, rising poverty, and youth uncertainty." According to her, the sole purpose of such incidents is to deepen divisions in society by diverting public attention from the real problems.
Who was Baba Bulleh Shah?
Baba Bulleh Shah was a great Sufi poet and philosopher of the 17th-18th centuries, whose message was based on love, tolerance, and humanism. The vandalism of his tomb in Uttarakhand has sparked outrage not only within spiritual communities but also within political circles.
Mufti concluded by saying that attempts to destroy India's pluralistic spirit and its identity of "unity in diversity" are detrimental to the country's democracy. The Uttarakhand police have launched an investigation into the incident, but the political temperature continues to rise.
